Spider-Who Part 38: Anansi, the Spider-God

I should say that this Anansi is from the Marvel Fairy Tales comic series. He’s based on the African mythology of the spider spirit who is the keeper of stories. There is a version of Anansi in the regular Marvel 616 universe, but he is more of a very wise old man who is also technically a god of ancient times. It’s the Marvel Fairy Tales version that starts venturing into Spider-Man territory.

In the story told in the single issue of Marvel Fairy Tales that he appears in, the other gods of the land, water, air, etc. believe he is a lying trickster. In actuality he’s the god of stories. Anansi decides he wants more power and goes off in search of a mystical flower called the Spider Orchid. Along the way he encounters these elementals who all want to stop him from getting more power because they believe him to be deceitful. Every time they fight him, and every time he defeats them. But for each and every one he is merciful and shows that he is not the person they think he is, and they join him on his quest. By the time they find the flower, he decides that he doesn’t need the power of the Orchid, because he has already become more powerful by learning the power to forge friendships. Awwwwww.

Anansi also appears in Spider-Verse when Spider-UK travels into his universe to recruit him to help fight against the Inheritors.
